Why do I need a CDN?

Why use a CDN

In most cases a website’s content is located on one server. But being reliant on one source of content can be problematic because if the server went down, content got wiped, there was a high amount of traffic, or a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, then it would cripple the website.

A CDN can balance the load of content by distributing it between several servers positioned around the globe. Which means the website’s content will be delivered much faster than if you were to rely on one server. It does this by directing users if a server goes down, if content gets wiped on a server it can be replaced with another server’s content, traffic is distributed between servers depending on users’ locations which won’t slow down a site, and DDoS attacks can be counter balanced by distributing requests across a wide number servers.

What are the benefits?

A CDN can boost a website and improve traffic for a company.

1. Performance and Money
A CDN increases performance which improves efficiency for grabbing and displaying content, making a site’s content available for payment transactions or displaying info.

2. Geographical Servers
The closer a server is the faster the speeds, for example if you have a heavy video based site then a user’s location can be identified, the nearest server is contacted, and data is downloaded resulting in a quick streaming experience without interruptions.

3. Version Control
Content replication can be a real boost to a site when distributed across several servers, however if a server is not up-to-date then version control can take affect by grabbing the latest file.

4. Pre-cache
Like most search engines Google uses a CDN, so if someone visits a website Google will cache it, if someone visits the site the data will already be cached meaning faster response times when entering the site.

5. Easy Setup
CDNify’s interface is easy to use, data is pay-as-go so data can added on the fly and there are no subscription fees, new resources (sites) can be added, and costs are extremely low. Plus, you can have a CDN up and running in a matter of minutes.

If you have a project that is intended for geographically diversified audience, CDN is exactly what you need, because it allows to deliver your static content much quicker in different regions by placing (caching) them on different CDN nodes. Thus your project loading times can be decreased significantly because statical assets, such as JS, CSS, images and videos will be delivered to the client via the best route. I chose Inxy.com to search for good CDN solutions and never regretted about it. They helped me choose correct provider and also gave some tasty discount. Recommend to everyone!
